San Diego: Closures, Cancellations & Postponements Due To Coronavirus

A current list of concerts, festivals, sporting events, and venues in San Diego, that have been closed, cancelled, postponed, or altered due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Based on recommendations from the World Health Organization, the CDC, and Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, "We would recommend that there not be large crowds."

UPDATES:

Wednesday (3/18): Sycuan Casino Resort will be temporarily closing amid continuing COVID-19 concerns. This closure will become effective on Friday, March 20, 2020 at 12PM, through at least the end of March. The Sycuan Market will remain open.

Tuesday (3/17): California State Parks announced the temporary closure of all campgrounds in the state park system to support state and local efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus). At this time, non-campground outdoor areas of parks, including trails and beaches, remain open. Visitors are reminded to practice social distancing and maintain at least six feet between other visitors and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Restrooms also remain open, and visitors are advised to take soap for hand washing and alcohol-based hand sanitizers when water is not available. 

Sunday (3/15): California State Governor Gavin Newsom declared that all bars, nightclubs, breweries, and wineries must close because their operation is not essential. In addition, the CDC recommended that no gatherings with 50 people or more take place for the next eight weeks to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

  • The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park will be closed from Monday, March 16 - April 1.
  • Legoland California will be closed from Saturday, March 14 - 31.
  • SeaWorld parks will be closed from Monday, March 16 - 31.
  • Birch Aquarium is closed to the public until further notice.
  • The USS Midway Museum will be closed temporarily starting Monday, March 16.
  • The Broadway San Diego production of Frozen has been postponed. More info here.
  • The Old Globe has suspended public performances now through the end of March.
  • San Diego Opera, San Diego Symphony, La Jolla Music Society and La Jolla Playhouse have cancelled or postponed performances through the end of March.
  • Old Town's Cygnet Theatre is postponing all performances from March 12 - April 15.
  • California Center for the Arts Escondido is cancelling / postponing all events now - March 31.
  • San Diego Padres will not hold any events at Petco Park for at least the remainder of March.
  • San Diego Gulls hockey are suspending play until further notice.
  • San Diego Loyal soccer team has postponed the team's home opener and play until USD reopens campus activities.
  • San Diego Legion rugby is suspending regular season play for 30 days starting March 12.
  • San Diego Seals lacrosse season is temporarily suspended.
  • San Diego Sockers' season has been suspended.
  • All Little League baseball and softball activities suspended until April 6.

SCHOOLS and UNIVERSITIES Impacted:

  • San Diego State University SDSU | Following Spring Break, effective April 6, 2020 all courses will be conducted online, not on campus or classrooms.
  • University of California San Diego UCSD | Will begin conducting all courses and lectures remotely on March 25 when the spring quarter begins.
    • Certain sports events have been affected as well.
  • University of San Diego USD | All classes are cancelled March 14 - 22. Starting March 23 the university is moving to campus-wide remote teaching starting March 23 and through the end of the spring semester. Students living in on-campus residence halls are being asked to relocate by March 22.
    • All intercollegiate athletic events and club sports are cancelled for the rest of the season.
  • Southwestern College students and campus staff are moving all in-person classes to online or distributed instruction from March 16 - 20.
  • Palomar College is moving all classes online starting March 30 and for the remainder of the spring semester.
  • Grossmont and Cuyamaca College campuses will close March 16 - 20 and shift to online instructions through March 29. Classes to resume March 30 - more details.
  • San Diego Community Colleges will close beginning Monday, March 16. On March 23, 100% of classes will resume and be taught remotely - more details.
  • Alliant International University has moved all on-campus and ground-based courses to virtual classrooms.

NATIONAL Cancellations and Postponements, including SPORTS:

  • Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park will be closed starting Saturday, March 14 and continuing through at least the end of March 2020.
  • Universal Studios Hollywood will closed with a targeted reopening date of March 28, 2020.
  • Live Nation is "hitting the pause button on current touring arena shows through the end of the month" (March).
  • The PGA Masters Tournament originally scheduled to start on April 9 has been postponed and the remainder of the Players Tournament is cancelled.
  • NBA the National Basketball Association has suspended its season TFN due to a player testing positive for the virus.
  • MLB Major League Baseball is suspending spring training and the start of the regular season.
  • NHL and AHL National and American Hockey Leagues have decided to suspend their seasons indefinitely.
  • The NCAA has cancelled March Madness, plus SEC, Big Ten, Ivy League, AAC, MAC, ACC, Big 12 and WAC have all cancelled their conference tournaments.
  • The Boston Marathon scheduled for April 20 has been postponed for September 14.
  • XFL has cancelled its remaining regular season games.
  • CIF State Basketball Championship games have been cancelled.
  • The National Lacrosse League NLL has temporarily suspended play.
  • The USL United Soccer League on March 12 announced that it will postpone play for at least 30 days.
  • Austin's South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival scheduled for March 13-22 has been cancelled.
  • James Bond "No Time To Die" release date postponed from April to November 2020.
  • "Peter Rabbit 2" release date postponed from April 3 to August 7, 2020.
  • "A Quiet Place 2" March 20 release has been postponed TBD.
  • Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony scheduled for May 2 has been postponed.
