Off-Duty Police Officer Shot In Scuffle With Gunman After Metallica Concert

An off-duty sheriff's deputy was shot 3x during a scuffle with a gunman after the Metallica concert at Petco Park early Monday morning, police say.

Deputy Jason Philpot and two off-duty Escondido police officers were among the group that was confronted by a man carrying a gun on Island Ave. near Sixth at approximately 1:15am.

When the man brandished a gun, Philpot immediately tried to wrestle it away from the man and was shot in the shoulder three times.  Non of the off-duty officers were carrying guns at the time.

The deputy was conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived and his injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening.

The gunman, however, has not been apprehended and was seen fleeing south on Fifth Avenue and then East on K Street.  He was described as black, in his 30's, approximately 5'10" tall and weighing around 165 lbs.  He was wearing black shorts and a long sleeve shirt.

Another man was seen fleeing the scene as well, but it is unclear if or how that person was involved.

Police are reviewing footage caught by nearby surveillance cameras and interviewing nearly a dozen witnesses.
