The 1975 Embraces Obsessive Meme Culture In 'The Birthday Party' Video

On Wednesday (February 19), The 1975 gifted fans the next offering from its upcoming album, Notes On A Conditional Form, a new song called “The Birthday Party” along with a music video for the track.

“The Birthday Party” was teased on Monday (February 17) via a website titled Mindshower and a short video on social media and follows “Me & You Together Song.”

The video follows lead singer Matty Healy (as a digital avatar) as he checks into a detox facility and ventures through a digitalized woodland filled with infamous memes (think the distracted boyfriend, Pepe the Frog, the crying cat and more).

“I like the idea of me kind of being at one with all of the other memes and us all being part of the same kind of coding because sometimes I don't feel like there's much difference especially for someone like me,” Healy told Dazed about the video. “I am a meme for a lot of my fans so there’s not much difference between me and like the stonks guy or like the clown frog.”

There are also a ton of pretty chaotic graphics throughout the video especially as Healy takes a head-first dive through a phone screen into a labyrinth among other poignant visuals.

The song continues the band's ever-present fascination with online culture and our dependency on technology and social media as well as Healy's journey after leaving a rehab center for drug abuse.

“Reality is chaos so if you create an algorithm that keeps you informed on as much of the chaos as possible from the second you get up to when you go to bed, I'm not surprised we're all really f****** anxious and terrified and think the world’s going to end,” he said.
