Second Doses Are Now The Priority At San Diego County Vaccination Sites

Vaccination sites in San Diego County are prioritizing people with appointments for their second dose, reports County News Center.

The ongoing shortage of COVID-19 doses in the region is delaying new appointments for residents who want to get their first dose of the vaccine.

Pfizer doses that have been shipped to the county are being almost exclusively used to vaccinate people with their second dose.

There is currently a shortage in Moderna doses in San Diego as they are trying to make up for the shipments delayed across the country caused by the winter weather several weeks ago.

“Our sites are working diligently to complete the vaccinations of people who are due for their second doses,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “When we get through the Moderna backlog, and more doses arrive, including the new Johnson and Johnson vaccine, first-dose appointments will be released for the many people who are both eligible and eager to get vaccinated.”

Earlier this week, it was announced that Johnson & Johnson would be sending their recently approved single-dose vaccine to San Diego. When those doses will be available to residents is still unknown.

County News Center reports that nearly 1,070,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been delivered to the region and nearly 946,000 have been administered to residents.
