The past few years have been a whirlwind for the housing market, especially in California.

Real estate agents were shocked when a San Francisco home sold for $1 million over its asking price just three days after it was listed.

While no luxury home sales broke records in San Diego County, there were six homes that sold for over $20 million.

A new report from the San Diego Union-Tribune rounded up the 5 most expensive home sales the city saw in 2021:

1 - 2983 Sandy Lane in Del Mar: $24.9 million

The beachfront property actually sold while it was still under construction. The half-acre property is located behind a gated community with direct access to the beach near the entrance of the San Dieguito River.

According to the Union-Tribune, its sale price makes it the third-largest home sale in San Diego County history.

2 - 311 Dunemere Dr. in La Jolla: $23.5 million

In June, Sen. Mitt Romney sold this home to biotech investor and venture capitalist William Rastetter.

Romney and his wife Ann purchased the 3,009-square-foot home for $12 million in 2008. They then tore it down to build an 8,153-square-foot mansion with five bedrooms and six bathrooms. It's one of around 30 beachfront homes in La Jolla, according to the Union-Tribune.

3 - 17111 El Vuelo in Rancho Santa Fe: $22.9 million

While it's not a beachfront home, the Union-Tribune reports that is the largest in size on this year's list. The home is 22,500 square feet and the lot is 33 acres.

The six bed, eight bath, and five-car garage home comes with a gourmet kitchen, solar panels, smart home features, and a garden with exotic plants and flowers imported from all over the world.

4 - 303 Vista De La Playa in La Jolla: $21.75 million

This 5,098-square-foot-home is located directly on the beach. It includes a gourmet kitchen, six bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms, a detached guest house, and more. It's also less than 200 feet from the former home of Sen. Romney which is No. 2 on the list.

5 (tie) - 5305 Carlsbad Blvd. in Carlsbad: $20 million

This is the most expensive home to ever sell in Carlsbad. The 10,000-square-foot mansion has trail access to the beach and has a detached guest home. It also has quick access to McClellan-Palomar Airport if the homeowner has a private jet.

5 (tie) - 311 Sea Ridge Dr. in La Jolla: $20 million

This home was designed by architecture firm Blue Heron with the priority of maximizing ocean views. It has 3,000 square feet of outdoor space including a floating bridge, water walls, and roof-top entertainment space.
