Mayor Todd Gloria's "Sexy Streets" initiative will allocate funding to repair more than 50 miles of roads in historically neglected San Diego communities.
According to inewsource, the city has set aside $40 million for repaving throughout San Diego and finalized its list of winning projects back in December. Council District 6 which includes Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Sorrento Valley, will receive 12 miles of road improvements.
Council District 4 which includes Encanto, Skyline Hills, Paradise Hills, and Valencia Park will receive 9 miles.
Multiple businesses owners on Reo Drive in Paradise Hills, which is among the improvement projects, spoke with inewsource about the long-needed upgrade.
“Sometimes Paradise Hills gets forgotten because of the larger southeast San Diego area,” Carlos Barragan, who has run the House of Boxing gym on the corner of Reo Drive and Albermarle Street for 10 years, told inewsource.
Gloria's "Sexy Streets" program is meant to prioritize infrastructure needs in underfunded neighborhoods. To determine which communities needed the most repairs, the city used a 2019 Climate Equity Index Report that ranked the city's 297 census tracts.
The city says these communities will start seeing road repairs underway very soon.
