Turns out reality shows do rot your brain and watching the Kardashians for just 60 seconds may sap your sympathy for the poor and make you a more materialistic person.
Research provided from the London School of Economics found that exposing yourself to "materialistic media" and similar shows that "glamorize fame, luxury and wealth accumulation" have shown to bring out the worst in people such as materialistic sentiments and less concern for others, especially those of a lower economic status.
Researcher and author of the study Rodolfo Leyva concluded:
“The way this is expressed depends on our culture. If there is more emphasis on materialism as a way to be happy, this makes us more inclined to be selfish and anti-social, and therefore unsympathetic to people less fortunate. This study can contribute to explanations for why the UK public’s support for welfare to aid the impoverished and unemployed has been decreasing.”
