Someone abandoned a litter of seven Husky-mix puppies on the side of a San Diego freeway, where they were found and brought to a county animal shelter. The shelter transferred them transferred to Rancho Coastal Humane Society where they have been cared for since.
The six females and one male puppy are about eight weeks old. In honor of their arrival three days before Halloween, most of them are named after characters in Tim Burton movies. They include Jack Skellington and his sisters, Coraline, Zero, Oogie Boogie, Sally, Pumpkin, and Ghost. (Their adopters can change their names.)
When they arrived at Rancho Coastal Humane Society, the puppies underwent medical and behavior evaluations. Each puppy will be spayed or neutered before adoption. All vaccinations will be up to date. And all seven of the puppies will go to their new homes with a registered microchips.
They are currently in foster care with trained volunteers and are expected to be available for adoption in about two weeks.
RCHS Spokesman John Van Zante says, “There are lots of options for people with puppies or kittens that they’re unable to care for. There are a dozen animal shelters and about 200 rescues in San Diego County. If you have a litter that you cannot or do not want to keep, leaving innocent puppies or kittens in a box beside a freeway should never be an option.”
At RCHS the adoption fee is $195 for puppies under 6 months. There is a $50, refundable, training deposit for puppies. Adopters who return with a puppy training certificate can get their $50 back or donate it and take the tax write-off.
The adoption fee Includes medical exam, spay or neuter, up to date vaccinations, registered microchip, and a one-year license if the dog’s new home is in the jurisdiction of San Diego Humane Society’s Department of Animal Services.
If you are not able to adopt, please make a donation to help provide care or become a Virtual Foster by sponsoring a pet until it is adopted.
RCHS at 389 Requeza Street in Encinitas is open to adopters 11 AM to 2 PM Friday through Monday… and by appointment Wednesday and Thursday.
