What Caused Purple Haze Over Arizona Skies?

Early Friday morning, residents of Snowflake, Arizona awoke to an eerily, intense purple haze that illuminated the sky.

Those who work at nearby Copperstate Farms are familiar with colored lights at the state's largest wholesale medical marijuana facility, but they had never seen this glowing phenomenon.

Cara Smith who works at the facility took a photo of the otherworldly sky at 6:30am before she went to work, and it quickly got attention. When asked about the phenomenon, Smith told CNN “The purple lights are always there but don’t usually light up the sky like this. It had snowed that morning and was still very foggy and cloudy.”

Turns out the purple haze was a result of the water droplets capturing the dense, low-lying fog which reflected the light and made it spread across the sky.

Copperstate Farms uses a combination of blue and red lights at night to help its 70 different strains of cannabis grow in numerous greenhouses across its 40 acre farm located in Navajo Farms, AZ. The combination of colored lights look purple from a distance, but normally not like this.
