Former Patriots Aaron Hernandez Found Dead In Prison Cell

Former NFL star and TE for the New England Patritots, Aaron Hernandez, who has been serving a life sentence for a murder conviction and was acquitted just days days ago was found dead in his prison cell.

Hernandez died after hanging himself in his prison cell early Wednesday morning according to Massachusetts prison officials.

Guards found Hernandez unresponsive in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center just after 3am, according to Department of Corrections spokesman Christopher Fallon.

The former New England Patriots tight end was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial-Health Alliance Hospital one hour later.

Hernandez was in a single cell in the general population housing unit in the maximum security prison.  Officials claim that he hanged himself using a bed sheet that he attached to a cell window.

Fallon states that there hasn't been a suicide note found as of yet, but there is an ongoing investigation.  Officials weren't concerned for his mental health and had no reason to believe that Hernandez was going to take his own life or they would have transferred him to the mental health unit.

Hernandez was acquitted of 2 fatal shootings that took place in 2012 but was still serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for his conviction in a 2013 shooting of Odin Lloyd, who was dating Hernandez' sister.
