San Diego Teachers Union Pushes Back On District's Reopening Date

San Diego Unified recently announced a plan to reopen schools for in-person learning in April.

Due to the trend in lower COVID-19 cases, the district issued a press release stating that schools would aim to have children back in the classroom on April 12.

Just a few days after the announcement, an email obtained by Voice of San Diego revealed that teacher's union leaders and the district never reached an agreement on a reopening date.

“Media coverage in the past few days has fixated on the potential date of returning to in-person instruction,” officials wrote in an email to union members. “This is concerning as it diverts attention from the critically important work that must be done to create the conditions for a safe return and may set up false expectations around dates should these conditions not be met. … Any date for a required return is a projection and not set in stone.”

During a forum hosted by Voice of San Diego, a San Diego Unified teacher, Shane Parmely, also reiterated that the April 12 reopening date is not set in stone.

"They didn't say they're opening the entire school [district] April 12," said Parmely. "It was interesting to watch that get put out in the media. Both union and the school district was like, 'That's interesting because nothing's finalized.'"

The district would have to meet several guidelines before getting teachers and students in classrooms on April 12, such as getting teachers vaccinated, putting virus mitigation measures in place, and San Diego County must fall into the state's red tier.
