Governor Gavin Newsom announced more details of his $100 Billion California Comeback Plan.
On Tuesday, May 11, Newsom revealed the proposed comeback plan will confront the homelessness crisis throughout the state.
The $12 billion plan to tackle homeless is the largest investment of its kind in the state's history, according to the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom.
The plan will provide 65,000 residents with housing placements and offer 300,000 people housing stability. It will also create 46,000 new housing units.
Newsom's plan is meant to build off the success of Homekey, which provided safe shelter to 36,000 Californians and created 6,000 affordable housing units during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The California Comeback Plan invests a historic $12 billion to expand these successful programs and seeks to end family homelessness within five years. That’s the idea behind the Comeback Plan’s homelessness investments – more, faster and with accountability and efficiency stitched into the fabric of these new investments," said Newsom.
The comeback plan is also tackling another prevalent issue in California, the drought.
Newsom proposed a $5.1 billion package of immediate drought response and long-term water investments like emergency needs for communities.
“This package of bold investments will equip the state with the tools we need to tackle the drought emergency head-on while addressing long-standing water challenges and helping to secure vital and limited water supplies to sustain our state into the future," said Newsom.
He is also proposing $1 billion to help Californians pay overdue water bills.
