Over half a million people in San Diego don't have enough to eat. Most people think hunger is a problem that only the homeless face, but in reality less than 5% of the people that get help from the San Diego Food Bank are homeless. Most of the Food Bank's recipients are working families and seniors that just can't make ends meet.
550,000 people in San Diego County are fed by the San Diego Food Bank and North County Food Bank chapter each month. That's a staggering number, but it's possible because the Food Bank knows how to stretch a dollar - they can provide five meals with every $1 dollar donation they receive.
Join us on Wednesday, December 1st for the 2021 Holiday Food Drive and Day to Donate:
- Stop by the VONS on 3550 Murphy Canyon Road in San Diego from 5am to 11am
- Drive-through and donate $5 hunger bags for a family in need
- Drive-through with packaged, non-perishable food donations (see requested items below). Donors are encouraged to place food drive donations in their vehicles. When entering the donation drive-thru, please keep all windows up, simply pop open the trunk, and a volunteer will remove the food donations.

These are the Food Bank’s “most needed” food items:
- canned meats & tuna
- peanut butter
- canned soups
- canned fruits, vegetables & beans
- spaghetti
- cereal
- rice
- mac & cheese
The Food Bank feeds:
- working-poor families
- fixed-income seniors
- low-income military families
- children living in poverty
The Food Bank supplies food to more than 500 San Diego County nonprofits with food programs, including: food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, low-income daycare centers, after-school programs, and faith-based organizations.
Before the pandemic, the Food Bank provided food assistance to 350,000 people per month – about 11% of the county’s population. Currently, the Food Bank is still serving record numbers - an estimated 550,000 people per month due to COVID-19’s lasting impact on economy.
