$3 Billion Riverwalk San Diego Project Approved By City Council

The 200-acre space between Friars Road and Hotel Circle North will now be known as Riverwalk San Diego. The San Diego City Council unanimously approved the plan proposed by the Hines Group, which is described as "a once-in-a-lifetime chance to create a park, restore river habitat, and establish a vibrant live-work-play neighborhood in San Diego—all accessible by trolley."

The $3 billion dollar project, will transform the area into a transit-oriented, neighborhood development that includes:

  • 4,300 residential units (10% allocated for affordable housing)
  • 97 acres of open space
  • 150,000 square feet of retail space
  • 1,000,000 Class-A office space
  • A new transit stop (Metropolitan Transit System Green Line trolley)
  • Safety - the organization is addressing the homeless population by partnering with a Homeless Outreach team

The Hines Group plans to break ground on the Riverwalk San Diego project in the second half of 2021, by converting the existing golf course into green space, and housing construction will follow that.

The Hines Group has committed $750,000 annually to maintain Riverwalk San Diego parks and they building the trolley station with their own funds, without a taxpayer expense.
