Caterpillar Problems

Why are caterpillars so cute yet so destructive? We have a few plumeria trees around are yard that I just love. I love them cause we planted them just from little stick cuttings we took off a friends massive tree. I love them cause their flowers are beautiful and smell amazing. And finally I love them cause they remind me of Hawaii. So when I saw one of my sweet trees all chomped up the other day I went to investigate and found this guy. I didn't want to kill him so I broke the big leaf off and moved him and the leaf to another part of the yard where he can chomp away..............
