Molten Rock From Hawaiian Volcano Crashes Through Roof Of Boat, Injures 23

An explosion in Honolulu Hawaii caused by lava that is still oozing its way into the ocean sent molten fireballs through the roof of one sightseeing boat, injuring 23 people.

Tourists aboard the boat were taken to the nearby Kilauea site to see lava plunging into the ocean from the volcano that has been erupting for nearly two months.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, explosions or various sizes occur when 2,000 degree lava enters the much colder seawater which is what will send molten rock and other debris high into the air.

In this case the lava punctured the boat's roof which left a gaping hole and 23 tourists injured. One woman was in serious condition with a broken thigh bone whereas the 22 others suffered burns and scrapes.

The owner of the boat and captain of the vessel said he never saw an explosion that made created the molten rock rain down on his boat.
